Captain John Scott

John Scott was the company's first organizer and first commander. Under his leadership, the Black Horse Cavalry established its reputation at the Battle of First Manassas and earned its unique post of honor as escorts to Generals Lee and Stonewall Jackson.

Robert Martin was the first sergeant, and in that capacity had displayed the highest qualities of a soldier… Robert Martin, too, was foremost in every fight. He appeared to court danger for itself, and it seemed there was nothing he so little valued as life. To him, by general consent, therefore, the rifle was awarded as 'the bravest of the brave.' — Captain John Scott, on awarding the bravery rifle to Robert Edward Martin

A full listing of officers will be added here as research is compiled from the Register and related manuscripts. Descendants with information on any officer of Company H are encouraged to write to hopewell@blackhorsecavalry.org.
