Born: 30 April 1838,[4087] at Woodville, Rappahannock County.[4088] Married: Sallie Alice, wife of John R. Turner, born Sept. 2, 1844; died April 2, 1888.[4089] He wed Sally Armstrong (2 Sept 1844–2 April 1888).[4090] John Roberts Turner married Sally Alice Armstrong around 1866. She was born 2 September 1844 at the Jett Farm, Culpeper County, and died 2 April 1888 in Warrenton. She is buried at Warrenton Cemetery. Her parents were John Spilman Armstrong and Sarah Jane Settle.[4091] Married again after Sallie A. A. Turner.[4092] He “married second Emma S. Newby, July 12, 1890 at Warrenton….” She died on 25 August 1932 in Warrenton.[4093] Died: April 7, 1918, [4094] at Warrenton.[4095] Buried at Warrenton Cemetery; CSA marker.[4096] 1918; buried at Warrenton Cemetery.[4097] Obituary: Children: Edward Spilman Turner, 18 September 1870–21 April 1922; “Mr. Hugh Turner, of Newport News, … Mrs. Anderson, of Charleston, South Carolina, and Mrs. W. H. Lewis, of Rectortown….”[4098] Their children (with dates of birth) were Hugh D. (about 1867), Nellie Ellen (about 1869), Edward Spilman (18 September 1870), Alice “Olive” (about 1873), and Janie (11 October 1874).[4099] Sally Armstrong who wed John Roberts Turner was “mother of Alice Turner Lewis.”[4100] So: Hugh Turner. Nellie, who might have a wed a Mr. Anderson. Edward Spilman Turner (18 September 1870–21 April 1922) wed Mela Boston. Janie, who might have a wed a Mr. Anderson. Alice “Olive” Turner (c. 1873– ) wed W. H. Lewis. Hugh Davidson (23 July 1867– ) wed Willette Montague (29 August 1869– 11 February 1932) on 20 November 1889; Ellen Lewis (11 January 1869– ); Edward Spilman (18 September 1870–21 April 1922); Frank (2 May 1873–4 May 1873); Alice May (2 June 1873– ); [NOTE:both say child of J. R. and Sallie A. Turner. either mistake in transcribing year, or were twins & mistake on month] Jane Settle (11 October 1874–22 September 1908) wed Fred Roark; Cynthia (17 March 1888–19 March 1888).[4101] Parents and Siblings: Other Family: John R. Turner was brother-in-law to John Edward Armstrong [BH] and Tarleton Fleming James [BH].[4102] John Turner’s first wife, Sally, and Fleming James’s wife, Lucy, were sisters, and their brother was Ed Armstrong. See Armstrong’s entry for more about the family of John Turner’s first wife. Sally Armstrong who wed John Roberts Turner was “grandmother of Louise Lewis Laughlin; great-grandmother of Shirley Lewis Massey.”[4103] Their son, Edward, “[i]n 1896 … married Miss Mela Boston, daughter of Rev. F. R. Boston, of Warrenton, who survives [Edward Turner] with three daughters, Misses Anne S. Turner, Ellie L. Turner and Mary Mela Turner. Their oldest child and only son died in infancy. [Edward] also leaves a brother, … two sisters, … and his step-mother… .” Edward died from Bright’s disease.[4104] Stories, Letters & Biographies: John Gott has letter from Henry Fones to Turner. # [Ask FHPS for this letter.] “For Sale.”[4105] See Stories Chaper under William Pickett Helm. Mentioned in Robert Allison Hart’s obituary. See Obituary Chapter. John’s first wife kept a journal during the summer of 1863. The journal predates their marriage and does mot mention her future husband, but provides insight to her life during that time. See Stories Chapter under Sally Alice Armstrong. Warrenton.[4106] John and Sallie Turner were living near Jeffersonton in 1870 when their son Edward was born, but soon after moved to Warrenton.[4107] Discharged 5 April 1865.[4108] “…Mr. John R. Turner [was] for many years clerk of the circuit court of this county….”[4109] John Gott says: was clerk of court of Fauquier for many years. One John R. Turner was listed as secretary of the Warrenton Bar in the newspaper clipping describing death of Alex Payne.[4110] Listed as “John K. Turner”;[4111] the “K” is incorrect. He was an honorary pallbearer at the 1909 funeral of Robert Allison Hart.[4112]
